Since 2006, the 'Encuentros' conferences have been held annually in Europe and have served as a platform for interaction for Chilean students and professionals working abroad, their counterparts in Chile, and foreign students and professionals interested in exchange and collaboration with Chile. For 2011 we have opened the conference to new horizons and will hold the first 'Encuentros' conference in North America: the organizers expect this to be the most attended conference to date. Visit the section history to get a fuller picture of previous and future 'Encuentros' conferences.
The Encuentros conferences recognize the key role that multidisciplinary meetings play in accelerating the career opportunities of their participants, through the creation of new collaborations and through the exchange of knowledge which result in generating innovative ideas. The conference will take place in English and will aim to gather 250 people at the University of California Berkeley, including opinion leaders, renowned Chilean and American professionals, Chilean and American government representatives, as well as young students.
The Encuentros conferences have been the subject of several news in the Chilean media, especially the newspaper 'El Mercurio'; visit the section press where you will find all news about Encuentros 2011 and previous conferences that have appeared in the press. Canal 13C produced a documentary about Encuentros 2010 in Cambridge, UK. This year El Mercurio and Canal 13C will be covering the event from Berkeley.
This year's conference aims to bring together students, professionals and entrepreneurs from ALL areas of knowledge and expertise.
There will be 6 thematic sessions each featuring expositions from renowned artists and scientists. There will also be a poster session to which all participants are encouraged to submit abstracts or proposals. The meeting will also count with two keynote lectures; one by Parag Saxena from Vendata Capital, and one by James Nelson from Stanfod University. There will also be a closing address by Michelle Bachellet from UN Women, a round table entilted 'Haciendo Chile fuera de Chile' and a workshop on the topic of 'Nobel Ideas' for which we will count with the participation of Charles Townes and Douglas Osheroff, Nobel laureates in physics in the years 1964 and 1996, respectively. Additionally, to promote the interaction and friendship among the participants, we will host a number of free social activities including lunches on the 11th and 12th, coffee breaks, a mixer during the round table 'Haciendo Chile fuera de Chile', a wine and cheese event during the poster session, and a closing party. There will also be additional paid social activities including a formal conference dinner at the international House of UC Berkeley, as well as two city tours to explore the nightlife in Berkeley and San Francisco.
We are confident this year the Encuentros Conference will become an intellectual springboard where both, Chileans and foreign nationals interested in Chile, can exchange knowledge and entrepreneurial experience in order to build networks that can expand and enhance their contributions to Chile's social and economic development.
